Reports to:  Senior Property Accountant

National Storage Affiliates is a self-administered, self-managed real estate investment trust, dedicated to the ownership, operation, and acquisition of self storage facilities. Through ongoing contributions from its Participating Regional Operations (“PROS”), third party acquisitions and joint venture partnerships, as of December 31, 2021, NSA currently holds ownership interests in and operations 1,050 self storage properties located in 42 states + Puerto Rico with approximately 67.8 million rentable square feet. NSA is one of the largest owners and operators of self storage facilities among public and private companies in the U.S.

We are seeking an impressive college junior or senior to join our Accounting team for a paid summer 2022 internship to support our large and growing team. You’ll sit within our Accounting team working alongside amazing and influential accounting partners. As an NSA Brands Accounting intern, you’ll have the opportunity to get hands-on experience supporting the development and on-going support to for our self-storage corporate brands located in 42 states as well as Puerto Rico. You’ll end the summer with a portfolio work and key foundational skills essential to running and operating a business and developing your business career.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform various general ledger accounting tasks in a multi-entity environment:
    • Develop, document and post journal entries
    • Cash transactions
    • Prepaids and accruals
    • Consolidation and elimination entries
    • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for all accounts
    • Reconcile balance sheet accounts, supported by best-practice-quality documentation
  • Prepare and review financial statements for individual properties and portfolios of properties
  • Apply critical thinking and Excel skills to analyze large data sets and find insights into financial results. Includes analyzing variances to budgeted and prior period amounts.
  • Assist Property Accounting and Corporate accounting team in preparing recurring and ad hoc management reports
  • Navigate state, city, and municipal government requirements to obtain business licenses
  • Assist in projects with external financial reporting
  • Prepare support in response to internal and external audit request
  • Support policies, procedures and internal controls which are in place to protect company assets and ensure financial statement accuracy
  • Assist with projects related to operations and operations support group.

Requirements:

  • Able to commit to a 10-14 week internship.
  • Available to work at least 20–25 hours per week.

Qualifications:

  • College junior or senior majoring in a related field such as Accounting, Business, Communication, etc.
  • Strong desire to learn operational strategies with an interest in hands-on experience.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and an effective communicator.
  • Strong critical-thinking skills and an ability to learn quickly.
  • Ready to be challenged and grow professionally.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Compensation range: $20 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8-hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in a university or college and studying for an accounting degree
  • High school or equivalent degree

Experience:

  • Ability to partner with the leaders to deliver solutions that meet business needs through understanding the business, the broader operating context, and the needs of our teams to deliver an outstanding storage experience to our customers.
  • Experience in business and change management is preferred.
